Middle Distance

Middle Distance examines how the pervasive influence of U.S. culture shapes individuals in a post-war Vietnam, a society that has historically resisted such forces. It reflects on the the broader generational disconnect from a complex past and examines how echoes of history and unresolved tensions manifest in the present. The project pulls inspiration from Joanne Kyger’s “I Am Afraid”:

I am afraid

of the time past….it is gone

and I

am searching in this present

to get full….of its reverberations

Give me a little humble pride to tell

the story

I think I may have to do this forever

just forever & ever

A maquette of Middle Distance was made. It includes 47 photographs and Joanne Kyger’s poem “I’m Afraid”.

A run of 50 self published artist editions were printed and are now sold out.

Photographs from Middle Distance have been shared in various shows, books, and online outlets
